Members of the City Council have been approached by citizen advisory committee members about the Council's policy requiring citizen advisory committees to comply with the Open Public Meetings Act (OPMA). In many situations, with the exception of the Planning Commission and Design Review Board, state law doesn't require that the City's citizen advisory committees comply with the OPMA. However, Council policy has required all citizen advisory committees to comply with the OPMA.
Input from some citizen advisory committee members has been critical of the policy requiring compliance with the OPMA because it can significantly limit how members can accomplish the work of the committee. As such, the Council has been asked to consider modifying the policy related to advisory committee compliance with the OPMA.
