The Miller and Fletcher Bay Roads Shoulder Improvements projects include installation of six-foot (5-ft paved) shoulder improvements from High School Road to New Brooklyn Road and Tolo Road to Peterson Hill Road. These projects are part of the Core 40 Program which started in 2007 and is envisioned to complete 40-miles of shoulder facilities on the Island. The City has been approved to receive Federal construction grants that will pay for over 80% of the estimated construction costs.
Public Works has recently evaluated a design suggestion to put a shared-use path on one side of the road instead of shoulders on both sides. Results of that analysis will be presented.
In addition, Public Works has made several changes to the original design to reduce the number of tress proposed for removal by over 50%. The current design shows a total of 16 trees to be removed for this shoulder widening, bicycle safety project. Project designs have recently been field-verified with representatives from Squeaky Wheels, as well as a local arborist. The project plans were also recently presented at a meeting of the BIMPRD Board.
